Readymade
Cologne, Germany
“Planter’s Chair” is a readymade piece — a low, easy chair with an inclined seat and long arms that extend into leg rests. Its design reflects the function and authority of the plantation owner within the colonial sugarcane plantation system. The extended arms served both as armrests and footrests, as it was common for a servant to remove the plan- tation owners boots while his feet were propped up. The design incorporates domination into the form of the object. These chairs were among a range of stock models exported to homes across the British colonies in India and Sri Lanka. The chair’s circulation into Euro- pean households conceals its origin in the infrastructure of racial capitalism.
The Planter’s Chair stored in Cologne is sourced from Bornheim, near Bonn, Germany.
